UNIX MAGIC

UNIX Magic featured a white bearded Wizard with UNIX related things around him, for example a spool labeled usr, a black cat, a boot, fork, pipes, buckets, a number of containers labeled troff, tar, null, awk, uucp. Books labeled daemons, whoami, traps, curses, pwd inbox. Hanging bags labeled spawn, nroff, dates and root. UNIX symbols on the Wizard's cape are $(default PS1), *(glob), and %(substring). Cursive writing on a parchment paper, "shell script" and there's even a 'C' container, and a partially obscured and broken 'B' container. And of course the Wizard is pouring commands into a giant shell.

UNIX FEUDS

UNIX Feuds featured a white bearded Wizard drawing an Excalibur like sword from a stone. UNIX symbols on the Wizard's clothes are $(default PS1), *(glob), and %(substring). Also related objects surrounding him on a battlefield depicting different distros of UNIX while INTEL and OSF Soldiers surround him. UNIX user shown on the headband, xopen shown on a shield, posix on the pennant and a black cat peering at the bottom.

UNIX VIEWS

UNIX Views featured a white bearded Wizard sitting with numerous references in the image to the UNIX operating system. UNIX symbols on the Wizard's clothes are $(default PS1), *(glob) and %(substring). UNIX references the box filled with shells, and another next to it containing Korn shell. Books labeled sed, ed, VI, and spell. Signs labeled REF and NFS. Grave stone labeled Version 6, roff, and tp. Flying daemons, and the black cat makes encore appearance in this poster.

UNIX Magic Poster

The oregano is reputedly referring to an incident in which one of the original folks involved with BSD was hassled for coming across the Canadian/U.S. border with a bag of what was assumed to be an illegal substance, and turned out to be oregano.

The UNIX posters were illustrated by Gary Overacre showing the various commands and concepts related to UNIX commands. It was designed to capture the essence of the UNIX operating system showing UNIX as the Wizard who is preparing command potions using the magic of different UNIX tools. The posters gained popularity for their whimsical and informative depiction of UNIX commands and has since become a beloved symbol within our UNIX and open-source communities.
